As quickly as it began, my 2023 SBDC Fall Directors Conference ended this afternoon. Roughly three days of great ideas and conversations with my counterparts from around the State of Oregon’s Small Business Development Center Network. I love those conferences…as they involve the only people in the State of Oregon who understand what is required to excel in my job. I’ve already shared 2-3 ideas I came across at the conference with my colleagues back in Coos Bay.

After the conference ended, I noticed in UDisc that there was one small nine-hole course roughly a mile down the road from me. So after saying a few goodbyes, and before having dinner with friends, I decided I would go over to check and see if I was allowed on the property. There were mixed messages on several of the resources I reviewed. Some saying the course was only available to members of the homeowners association in the community. Others saying that the course is available to the public and/or guests of the homeowners association. But in the end, I decided to play the course, after our State SBDC Network had just finished spending a pretty penny for us to meet in the community (literally the nicest hotel room I have ever stayed in….and I have spent years of my life crisscrossing the planet staying in hotels).

Sunriver SHARC DGC was a super short (1,185 feet over nine holes), super fun nine holes! Obviously several ace runs (no aces for me…sigh)! But a surprising amount of challenge for a course as short as it is. I was hoping to shoot no worse than an eighteen over nine holes, but Hole 7 (a right-to-left 125-foot right angle around a hill) got me. After missing my ~20-foot putt, I needed to settle for a -8 (19) and an estimated round rating of 935. Can you see me? Shaking my fist at the sky for not getting my deuce/two on Hole 7, when I only have myself and my suspect putting ability to blame? 🙂

Tonight I’ll be spending one last night in paradise (did I mention a two-story room, with a full kitchen, two bathrooms, a living/dining room, giant fireplace and back deck overlooking a golf course?), before heading back for home tomorrow.

Magic Number = -36 (2,036 Courses Played)

ABOUT DEREK

Disc Golfing in Paradise - Tonn's Travels

Derek Tonn is a member of the DGA’s Ambassador Team. His company, Mapformation, LLC, has been DGA’s partner in the development of disc golf tee signage since 2012. The longer our two companies have worked together, and the more Derek has gotten to know all the great folks at DGA, the more he has wanted to formally sing the company’s praises. The more he has realized that “Steady” Ed’s (the father of disc golf and the modern-day Frisbee) vision for the sport and his company perfectly describes his own interests and priorities related to disc golf, and the more Derek has recently been encouraged to share his story.
