In 1975, DGA made a significant contribution to the sport of disc golf by inventing the first disc golf basket. The term “disc golf basket” or “basket” is widely used, though the original name for it was “Disc Pole Hole.” Additionally, disc golf baskets are also referred to as cage, pin, hole, target, disc catcher, goal, chains, bucket, and pole, among others.

A disc golf basket has a chain holder attached to the top of a pole, which is typically cemented into the ground. The chains attached to the holder encircle the pole and hang down towards a basket, which is located about halfway down the pole beneath the chain. An average disc golf course includes 18 baskets, but there are designs with more baskets, up to 27 holes, depending on available space. Disc golf baskets should comply with PDGA specifications to be utilized in tournament play.

Disc golf baskets are essential components of a disc golf course, playing a similar role as golf holes in traditional golf. When a flying disc touches the chains before landing into the basket, the hole is done, and the player’s score is calculated by adding the number of throws it takes for the disc to stop inside the basket.

Our hot-dipped galvanized baskets can also be powder coated in a choice of different colors. Each unit can be conveniently mounted in one of three ways: Direct Cement (No Frills Mounting Option), Anchor & Collar (Standard Mounting Option), or Portable Base (Portable Mounting Option). For ultimate portability, we offer our practice and portable Mach Lite and Mach Shift models. These baskets are designed with 16 strands of chain to reduce weight and increase mobility, and are ideal for practice and back-yard use.

Ah, how time flies! It’s incredible how much things have changed since 1976 when DGA was the only disc golf company. These days, it seems like everyone knows what disc golf baskets are when they see them in the park. It’s amazing to think back to when Ed Headrick and his son Ken first started DGA and revolutionized the Frisbee community with their Disc Pole Hole invention. People used to throw Frisbees at light poles, trash cans, signs, and even trees before the first basket was designed. But Ed’s idea of hanging chains over a basket was a game-changer and paved the way for the basic design that is still used today. Sure, there have been many attempts to improve upon the design, but the fundamental principles invented back then are still the foundation of every basket today. DGA has come a long way since then, introducing new inventions and patents that have improved the design even more. It’s amazing to see how much things have evolved, but it’s always nice to take a nostalgic look back.
